ICU/CCU
ICU, or Intensive Care Unit, is an area within an acute care hospital or setting that provides intensive monitoring and nursing care around the clock. It is generally the area in which patients go when they are too sick for a general floor or nursing unit within the hospital. Patients in ICU are often on mechanical ventilator (breathing machine), numerous medications, and require often hourly assessment by dedicated nursing staff. CCU, is a term used to describe Cardiac Care or Critical Care Units. These units are very much the same. Some hospitals have ICU's that specialize in certain patient types such as cardiac, surgical, medical etc.
